Looking for a Plan B

Things I’ve Learned Thursday (TILT #015)

In Matthew 14, Peter saw Jesus walking on water. He had the courage and the faith to ask Jesus if he could also walk on the water. “Come,” Jesus said. And Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on water. That’s bold! We have to stop here and give credit to Peter for his bold step of faith. Kudos to you, Peter. But, what happened next? As he walked, he became afraid and started to sink. Doubt crept in. He wasn’t quite sure that he could carry out what Jesus said “yes” to. He wasn’t sure if “Plan A” would work, so he started thinking about a “Plan B.”

Just like Peter, we sometimes start to doubt whether we can really do what we’ve set out to do. This happened to me just last week. I’ve been waiting on something that’s really important to me and that I believe in my heart is going to come to fruition. When it didn’t happen when I thought it would, I started working my plan B. I started hedging my bets like Peter. My heart started deceiving me. I thought, “Let me get some other balls rolling, just in case this doesn’t pan out.”

But, God stopped me in my tracks before I could get too far down that road. The calming presence of the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart. “There is no plan B, my son. I am the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). Outside of me, you can’t bear fruit. Keep your eyes on Me. Come.”

Don’t forget God today!
