Message of Encouragement Monday (MOEM #025):
No matter how long we have walked with God, sometimes we have to just get back to the basics; we have to return to the fundamentals of having a relationship with God. So, what does relationship with God look like? Well, let’s just look at it in some very simple and basic terms. When I was young, I had a friend whose sister began walking with God. She told her brother and I that relationship with God was like any other relationship. In any relationship, there has to be two-way communication. Both parties have to be able to converse with each other in one way or another. Even animals and pets find ways to communicate with us – when they’re hungry, when they’re scared, etc. People who are blind or deaf communicate as well. They find a way to have relationships despite not having access to all five senses.
So, years later, now that I walk with God myself, I have found that my friend’s sister’s advice is true. It is good foundational advice that we can always return to when we feel distant from God. We can talk to God through prayer. We can also speak to Him with our thoughts, our actions, our behaviors. When we walk in integrity or love others, we are communicating something to God. We can also speak rejection to God through those very same things. When we have hate toward others, or when we compromise what we know is right, we are communicating something about ourselves and about how we see God.
God speaks to us through the revelation of the Holy Spirit. His Spirit ministers to our spirit and lets us know when we are getting off course. A former pastor of mine has said, “When you’re about to do something that God doesn’t approve of, you will often feel uneasy. You might feel a heaviness or a weight on your shoulders. You will just intuitively know that what you are thinking about doing is not God’s will for your life. On the other hand, when God does want you to do something, you will feel peace, you will feel God’s approval.”
God also speaks to us through His written word – the Bible; He can speak to us through circumstances or through people. Have you ever come into contact with someone and they say something that gives you insight into something going on in your life? And you walk away thinking, “How in the world did they know to say that?” It can be God speaking through that person. So, there is this sixth sense if you will. We have our five senses, but we are spiritual beings, so God speaks to us on a spiritual level; that sixth sense that goes beyond what we can just see, taste, smell, feel, and hear. Sometimes we just know that God is speaking to us in a way that we can’t easily explain.
The bottom line is, our relationship with God, like any other relationship, must be built on communication. When we feel distant from Him, or separated from Him, we can always go back to that foundation of connecting with Him; reaching out to Him; looking for Him; asking Him; and looking to Him. And He assures us that He will be there! (Jeremiah 33:3, Jeremiah 29:12, Psalm 145:18, 1 John 5:14, Psalm 18:6, Job 22:27, Micah 7:7, Psalm 66:19-20)
Don’t forget God today!
