Things I’ve Learned Thursday (TILT #018)

Last week, my wife prayed a very personal prayer to God. She asked Him for a gift. She just wanted something special from Him, that she would know was from Him and that would let her know that God was thinking of her. These are the kinds of things we can ask of God when we have that intimate relationship with Him. The Bible says in James 4:2-3 that we have not because we ask not. God invites us to ask Him for good gifts.

The very next night, my wife and I decided to go to dinner. We went to a place that we go to on occasion to get a nice meal. When it was time to order, the waitress said, “If you’re up for it, we would like to treat you both to our Wagyu steak experience.” I thought I misunderstood her. “Can you say that again, please?” “Yes, that’s right. Wagyu steak for you guys tonight…on the house!” Awesome! It brought my wife to tears. She knew it was her Abba Father responding to her personal prayer. That’s the kind of relationship she has with Him. She knows that all good gifts come from the Father of the heavenly lights (James 1:17).

The very next night, we showed up for a dinner invitation with friends at an Italian restaurant. Fine dining. We ate until our hearts were content and when the bill came, “We got it. This one is on us,” said our dear friend. Wow! Score. Two nights in a row. The favor of God is flowing!

I’m not saying this to brag. If anything, I’m bragging about the God we serve. And I’m saying that you and I serve the same God that my wife does. I’m saying, “Get in on the gift giving!” Ask God for the things that have value to you and He will interact with you and answer you in a way that makes sense to you. You maybe couldn’t care less about a Wagyu steak, but I’d bet my last dollar that there are things that are important to you and that make your heart sing.

You can come before God and say, “Father, this is important to me. This is something that has been on my heart. This is something I would really enjoy. And I ask You for it. I ask You to provide this for me.”

We see repeatedly in the Bible that God delights in giving good gifts (Matthew 7:11, Luke 11:13, Psalm 84:11, Hebrews 11:6) and that He wants to give us the desires of our hearts (Psalm 37:4). I can’t promise what God’s response will be. But, I can tell you that He will respond to you in a way that makes sense to you because your relationship with Him is uniquely yours.

Don’t forget God today!
